North Island

Auckland’s Undiscovered Island Paradise

Great Barrier Island, or Aotea as it is known to local Māori, can be found in the far reaches of Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. Expect empty  beaches, stunning hikes, and a few surprises along the way. Life feels different on Great Barrier Island. From the moment you step off the  SeaLink Ferry you feel as though you have travelled back in time, in a good way. The sixth-largest island of New Zealand, the east coast of the island is where you will find stunning beaches, while the west coast is made up of calm sheltered coves and bays providing some of the best  diving and fishing in the country.

Inland, the native forest is perfect for hikers looking for a challenge like the Mount Hobson (Hirakimata) track, the island’s highest point at  621 metres. Try the award-winning Island Gin, distiller Andi will welcome you and take you through a private tasting. For the beer drinkers,  Aotea Brewing is a fantastic spot serving up some of the best pale ales around.

As an official International Dark Sky Sanctuary, Aotea is one of the best places in the world to see the stars. Let Good Heavens Stargazing point out the constellations during a private experience complete with blankets and hot chocolates.

There are several accommodation options on the island. From AirBnbs, to lodges, and even rooms at the Irish Pub. How to get there – Sailing  from Hamer Street in Auckland City, SeaLink is the only way to get to Great Barrier Island by sea.
