Honouring Matariki

From 9 to 12 July in Wellington Matariki Ahi Ka will present large-scale projections, fire, and performances on multiple stages.

Matariki is a special time in New Zealand — a chance to pause, reflect and reconnect with the people and places that matter most. Marked by  the rising of the Matariki star cluster, the season signals the Māori New Year and brings with it themes of remembrance, celebration and new beginnings.

Across the country, communities come together through festivals, shared meals, storytelling, music and cultural events that honour both  tradition and the future ahead. It is a time to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present and look forward with hope and purpose.

For visitors, Matariki also offers a unique opportunity to experience New Zealand culture in a meaningful and authentic way. From evening light displays and local markets to cultural performances and stargazing events, the celebrations showcase the strong connection between people, community and the natural world.
