Kaikōura In Spring

There are few places on earth quite like Kaikōura, a small coastal town surrounded by breathtaking scenery that can stop you in your tracks.  The towering, often snow-clad Seaward Kaikōura Range provides a spectacular backdrop to the town, rising to around 2,600 metres, while  the Kaikōura Peninsula reaches out into the Pacific Ocean. Just offshore, the remarkable Kaikōura Canyon plunges to depths of more than  1,200 metres surprisingly close to the coastline. This dramatic combination of mountains and deep ocean waters makes Kaikōura incredibly  unique and creates the perfect environment for an abundance of marine and birdlife. Spring brings a fresh energy to the region, with longer  days, warmer temperatures and a landscape coming alive with colour.

Start your visit by discovering the stories behind this unique place at Kaikōura Museum. Housed in the distinctive ‘craypot’ building, the  museum explores the area’s Māori and European heritage, fishing and whaling history, natural environment and enduring connection with  the sea.

Afterwards, head to Coopers Catch for a classic seaside favourite. Pick up fresh fish and chips and enjoy them while taking in the coastal  atmosphere – the perfect casual lunch after exploring the town.

Spring is also a wonderful time to get out on the water. Kaikōura Kayaks offers guided wildlife kayaking along the Kaikōura Peninsula, where  you can paddle among dramatic coastal scenery while looking for New Zealand fur seals, seabirds and, with luck, dolphins. Sunset kayaking  is  another memorable option, offering a peaceful way to watch the mountains change colour as the sun drops behind the Kaikōura ranges.

To truly appreciate Kaikōura’s 360-degree beauty, take to the skies by fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter. Scenic flights provide a spectacular  perspective of the coastline, mountains and Pacific Ocean, while aerial whale watching offers the unique opportunity to observe these  magnificent animals from above and see their natural behaviour in their ocean environment. Helicopter flights can take the experience even  higher, with the option of a snow landing when the surrounding mountains are covered in their beautiful covering of snow.

For those who prefer to explore on two wheels, Kaikōura offers a variety of spectacular mountain bike trails  showcasing its diverse  landscapes, from rugged coastlines  to majestic mountain ranges. There are tracks to suit all levels, from relaxed family-friendly trails to  challenging climbs. Cycling is also an excellent way to get around town and explore the surrounding countryside. More experienced riders  should make time for Middle Hill Mountain Bike Park, which offers a range of intermediate to advanced trails for a more challenging ride  and a great workout.

Back on foot, take time to explore the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway, visit the seal colonies or simply wander along the shoreline. With  wildlife  encounters, fresh seafood, fascinating history and spectacular scenery all within easy reach, spring is a beautiful season to  experience  Kaikōura at its best.
