Palmy is home to prominent art galleries, awe‑inspiring cultural sites, and bespoke heritage collections. Embark on a treasure trail through our creative city, soaking in colourful street art and sculptures throughout the city centre. Round it off with our strong theatre scene, including the only professional theatre in regional New Zealand, Centrepoint Theatre.
When it comes to cuisine, Palmy punches above weight with a generous array of eateries, restaurants and brew bars focused on fresh, seasonal produce and bold flavours. The city’s global culture (we’re home to more than 90 different cultures) is reflected in its diverse dining scene. From top‑notch Japanese and Korean cuisine through to noodle houses and rich Indian flavours, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
To stretch your legs between bites, head to the Manawatū River and explore sections of the riverside pathway. Walk through parks and native bush, taking in the calm of the awa as you cross the striking He Ara Kotahi bridge, out to Turitea Pā and the urban eels feeding platform. If you’re after a little adventure, there’s plenty on offer year‑round. Discover Arapuke Mountain Bike Park, with trails suited to a range of abilities, or take a relaxed rafting experience along the Rangitīkei River, drifting past towering white papa cliffs. For something different, a 4WD experience at Makoura Lodge offers a unique way to explore the countryside.
For a slower pace, Manawatū is a nature lover’s paradise. Enjoy a tramp through native bush at Te Āpiti – Manawatū Gorge, where birdsong carries through the landscape. Get even closer to native wildlife at the Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery Centre, where visitors can connect with conservation in a meaningful way.
Just 15 minutes from the city, the charming town of Feilding offers an authentic slice of rural life. A 16‑time winner of New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Town, it’s home to boutique shopping, welcoming cafés, and locally sourced food. Visit the Friday farmers’ market beneath the clocktower or experience the rhythm of the region at the Feilding saleyards – one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
Venture further and follow one of the scenic routes along The Country Road, where quiet drives reveal wide‑open landscapes, tucked‑away cafés, heritage sites, and galleries. It’s a chance to slow down and explore at your own pace, discovering hidden places along the way.
