Pukeahu National War Memorial Park
Pukeahu National War Memorial Park is our national place of remembrance. An oasis of tranquility in the middle of our capital city, Pukeahu is a space to remember and reflect on New Zealand’s experience of war, military conflict and peacekeeping.
Located in central Wellington, Pukeahu is an essential destination for all visitors to the city. Just a 15 minute walk from the waterfront, Pukeahu is the perfecct place to reflect among the architecture, gardens and important memorials.
The National War Memorial commemorates New Zealanders who died in conflict and honours all those who have served. Pukeahu hosts national days of remembrance, most notably Anzac Day on 25 April each year. The park also includes seven international memorials which reflects the strong bonds between Aotearoa and countries with which New Zealand has a shared military history.
Pause at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, the resting place for an unknown New Zealand soldier returned from the First World War battlefields of France, and stroll through Ngā Tapuwae o te Kāhui Maunga (The Footsteps of the Ancestors) garden to learn about the long relationship Māori have with the area.
Pukeahu is open to everyone, however the National War Memorial building is currently closed while we seismically strengthen the Carillon Tower. Come and explore Pukeahu, a place for everyone and full of things to see and do.
