Queenstown Spring Into Adventure
Spring is a special time in Queenstown. Snow still clings to the surrounding peaks, while down in the valley daffodils are blooming, the days are getting longer and the town starts to feel more relaxed.
With Lake Whakatipu sparkling beneath the mountains, Queenstown is the kind of place where you can pack a lot into a day – or do absolutely nothing and still have a great time.
Start with a wander along the waterfront. Grab a coffee, browse the shops and watch the boats coming and going across the lake. The Queenstown Gardens are just a short stroll away and are perfect for an easy walk among spring blooms, with spectacular mountain views. If you’re feeling energetic, hire a bike or explore one of the many walking trails around the lake and hills.
Of course, Queenstown wouldn’t be Queenstown without a little adventure. Spring is a great time to get out and play, whether that means jet boating, bungy jumping, ziplining, rafting or a scenic helicopter flight. For something gentler, ride the Skyline Gondola for sweeping views over the town, lake and Remarkables. Enjoy the view from the top or add a luge ride or walk to your trip.
Spring is also a great time to explore the surrounding countryside before the summer crowds arrive. Take the scenic drive to Glenorchy along the shores of Lake Whakatipu, with mountain peaks, rivers and forests providing plenty of excuses to stop for photographs.
Wine lovers can head to the nearby Gibbston wine region, known as the ‘Valley of the Vines’. Its cellar doors showcase some of Central Otago’s celebrated Pinot Noir, making it an ideal spot to spend an afternoon tasting local wines and enjoying lunch among the vineyards.
Back in Queenstown, the food and drink scene provides plenty of ways to finish the day. From casual lakeside eateries and famous burgers to sophisticated restaurants and cosy bars, there is something for every mood. As the evenings stay lighter, outdoor tables begin filling up again – perfect for a long lunch or a drink with a view.
And then there are the mountains. Spring brings waterfalls to life, snowdusted peaks gradually give way to green slopes, and the changing light makes the scenery look different every hour.
Queenstown may be famous for adventure, but you don’t have to be an adrenaline junkie to enjoy it. Spring is all about getting outside, slowing down and making the most of longer days. Come for the mountains, stay for the food, wine and scenery – and leave already planning your next visit.
