Spring into New Zealand

Spring is when New Zealand shakes off winter and bursts back to life. From September, longer days, warmer temperatures and colourful  gardens create the perfect invitation to get out and explore, whether you’re chasing coastal scenery, mountain adventures, wildlife  encounters  or simply enjoying the country at a more leisurely pace. Spring brings a lively calendar of events and festivals, giving visitors  another reason to get out and explore. From music, food and arts festivals to sporting events, garden celebrations and local community  gatherings, towns and cities across the country come alive. Whether you’re enjoying live jazz in Wellington, admiring spectacular wearable art, wandering through spring gardens or joining a festival by the water, there’s always something happening.

In the North Island, Rotorua is a wonderful spring destination, combining geothermal wonders, lush native forests and a rich Māori cultural heritage. Explore the steaming landscapes of Te Puia and Whakarewarewa, wander beneath towering trees in the Redwoods, or relax in one  of the region’s many thermal pools. With plenty of walking, cycling and adventure activities on offer, Rotorua makes it easy to fill a spring  getaway with memorable experiences.

Further south, the West Coast offers a completely different kind of spring magic. This wild and spectacular region is home to dramatic  mountains, rainforest, rivers and rugged coastline. Spring is also an especially exciting time for wildlife lovers, with the White Heron  (Kōtuku) colony at Whataroa providing a rare opportunity to see these magnificent birds in their only known nesting site in New Zealand.

Guided tours take visitors into the remote Waitangiroto Nature Reserve, where the sight of white herons nesting among the native bush is  truly unforgettable. Across the country, spring brings gardens into bloom, waterfalls flowing strongly and walking trails framed by fresh  green growth. It’s a season made for road trips, with fewer crowds than the peak summer months and plenty of reasons to stop along the  way.

From Rotorua’s bubbling geothermal landscapes to the pristine wilderness of the West Coast, spring is the perfect time to rediscover New  Zealand – with nature putting on one of its best shows of the year.
