Whanganui Spring Along The River

Spring is a wonderful time to discover Whanganui, when longer days, fresh greenery and warmer temperatures make it easy to explore this  historic riverside city and its surrounding landscapes. With the mighty Whanganui River at its heart, the region offers a relaxed mix of heritage, culture, nature and outdoor adventure.

The river has shaped Whanganui for generations and remains central to the city’s character. Take a leisurely stroll along the riverfront,  explore the local markets, or get out on the water for a kayaking or canoeing adventure. The river is also the gateway to the spectacular  Whanganui National Park, where native bush, waterways and remote landscapes provide a wonderful escape.

One of the city’s most distinctive attractions is the Durie Hill Elevator, a historic underground lift that has been transporting visitors up  Durie  Hill since 1919. At the top, a short walk leads to the Durie Hill War Memorial Tower, where panoramic views stretch across  Whanganui, the river and surrounding countryside.

Spring is also an ideal time to explore Whanganui’s parks and gardens. Virginia Lake is a local favourite, with walking tracks winding  through landscaped gardens and native planting. As spring arrives, flowers begin to bloom, making it a peaceful place for a morning walk or  picnic.

For a little more adventure, explore the region’s walking and cycling trails, go fishing or discover the famous Bridge to Nowhere. Accessible  by jet boat, kayak and walking or cycling routes, it is one of the area’s most memorable experiences.

With its combination of river adventures, fascinating heritage, creative talent and beautiful gardens, Whanganui offers a refreshing  alternative to the usual tourist trail. This spring, follow the river and discover a city where creativity, culture and nature come together.
