Whangārei’s new iconic tourist destination
The Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery is a multifaceted immersive experience celebrating painter, ecologist, architect and visionary Friedensreich Hundertwasser and contemporary Māori artists.
Located at the vibrant Town Basin marina in Whangārei, visitors can enjoy two exhibition spaces. The Hundertwasser in New Zealand 1973- 2000 exhibition includes original paintings, visual art, tapestries, ecological work and architectural models as well as an overview of Hundertwasser’s life in Aotearoa. There is also a film theatre showing Hundertwasser documentaries and on the terrace overlooking the marina is the Aqua Café-Restaurant.
The Wairau Māori Art Gallery, New Zealand’s first dedicated Māori public contemporary art gallery, features changing exhibitions. On top of the building is the special forest on the roof and golden cupola which visitors can climb to gain 360-degree views of the Town Basin and Whangārei cityscape.
The Museum Shop has exclusive and unique Hundertwasser applied art and Wairau Māori Art Gallery merchandise with a carefully curated selection of books and gifts. Visitors can self-guide or take a guided tour, available Thursday-Sunday at 11am. Tours tell the story of Hundertwasser, his legacy of a life lived in harmony with nature and his love of New Zealand. Alternatively, visitors can self-guide or purchase an audio guide when they arrive which provides guidance through the exhibition spaces and the Afforested Roof.
Book tickets online in advance or at the desk when you arrive.
