Generations of Adventure
Exploring Whanganui and Ruapehu with Ben & Rebecca
In the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, where ancient forests cloak volcanic slopes and the Whanganui River winds through deep valleys, adventure isn’t just a pastime—it’s a way of life. For Rebecca Mead and Ben Adam, co-owners of the Ruapehu Adventure Hub, it’s also a family tradition that spans generations.
Rebecca and Ben are the driving force behind four iconic tourism businesses: Whanganui River Canoes, Bridge to Nowhere Tours, Mountain Bike Station, and Raetihi Holiday Park. Together, they offer a seamless gateway into the wild beauty of the Whanganui and Ruapehu regions —inviting travelers to paddle, pedal, and play their way through one of Aotearoa’s most storied landscapes.
Their roots run deep. Rebecca’s family has been exploring and guiding in this region for generations, tracing back to her great grandad William Mead—a pioneering bushman and surveyor. William started the first ski club on Mount Ruapehu, and Mead’s wall is named after him today. William believed the best way to understand the land was to walk its trails, paddle its rivers, and sleep beneath its stars. That ethos still guides Rebecca today, as she blends operational excellence with a deep respect for the land and its stories.
Ben’s connection is equally profound. His family founded the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge and Tours in the early 2000s, carving out a unique experience in the remote Mangapurua Valley. Ben grew up on the river, working alongside his father and learning every bend, rapid, and hidden cove of the Whanganui. When he and Rebecca purchased the Bridge to Nowhere Tours from his dad last year, it marked a new chapter—one that honors the past while embracing the future.
Whanganui River Canoes offers multi-day journeys through lush native bush, past historic marae and remote settlements. Guests paddle the same waters once traveled by Māori and early settlers, with the haunting Bridge to Nowhere as a highlight. The Bridge to Nowhere/ Mangapurua Valley was abandoned after a failed settlement attempt. Bridge to Nowhere Tours brings this history to life, combining jet boat access with storytelling, ecology, and a sense of wonder.
For those who prefer two wheels, the Mountain Bike Station supports riders on the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail, offering gear, shuttles, and local insight. And when the day’s adventures are done, Raetihi Holiday Park provides a warm welcome—whether you’re pitching a tent, parking a campervan, or settling into a cozy cabin, or villa. But what truly sets Rebecca and Ben’s businesses apart is the heart behind them. With Rebecca’s expertise in operations, compliance, and guest experience, and Ben’s deep river knowledge and hands-on leadership, they’ve created a culture of care, safety, and storytelling.
Their team is trained not just in logistics, but in manaakitanga— offering hospitality that reflects the spirit of the land and its people. Running multiple adventure businesses in a rugged region isn’t easy. It takes grit, vision, and a shared sense of purpose. But for Rebecca and Ben, it’s more than a job—it’s a calling. Every guest who joins them becomes part of a living legacy, one that celebrates nature, history, and the joy of discovery.
In Whanganui, adventure isn’t just something you do. It’s something you inherit, something you share—and something you never forget.`
