Good Stop for a Good Yarn

It’s a timely stop, the Davaar & Co and Sprig & Thistle hub, for tourists travelling the four hour journey between Queenstown and Milford  Sound. A place to stretch the legs, grab a coffee, cinnamon bun or both and try on a beautiful woollen jersey.

Situated on the state highway at the entrance to the Macdonald family’s 109 year old property, Davaar Station – sisters Kate and Anna  Macdonald own and operate what’s becoming a thriving tourist attraction. It was originally the Davaar Station shearer’s quarters, and with a  bit of a spruce up, just enough to preserve its character, the rustic farm dwelling is now where the girls work from six days a week.

Boasting only 5 star reviews on google and dubbed ‘the humble hub’, the sisters’ warm hospitality is second to none. Anna is the foodie and  owner of Sprig & Thistle, baking everything herself each morning and Kate is the founder and designer of Davaar & Co, her knitwear brand   where she uses the sheep’s wool from Davaar Station to make a stunning collection of unisex jerseys. The duo’s unique products are the  epitome of taste and the setting below the Takitimu mountains surrounded by sheep (of course) make it what it is.

The stop is thriving in the warmer months from October to May and closed in the winter while the road is typically much quieter. Kate sells  her beautiful knits online so she can focus on other areas of her business during the cooler period, while Anna offers a bespoke catering  service to the area. A must stop shop if you’re on the road this summer!
