Nelson Tasman Sun Sea and Adventure

Spring brings Nelson Tasman to life. With more sunshine than almost anywhere else in New Zealand, the region is made for getting  outdoors,  and as the days grow longer, gardens burst into colour, vineyards welcome visitors and the coastline beckons.

Start in Nelson, a lively city surrounded by mountains and sea. Wander through the compact city centre, browse its galleries and studios, and  explore museums or the vibrant Saturday Market. Nelson is famous for its creative community, so keep an eye out for locally made jewellery,  ceramics, paintings and crafts as you explore. Spring is also the perfect excuse to slow down and enjoy the region’s food and wine. The fertile  landscape produces everything from berries and apples to hops and grapes, while local cafés, restaurants, breweries and cellar doors make  the most of the abundance. Head towards Moutere or Brightwater for a relaxed day exploring vineyards and artisan producers or pack a  picnic and find a sunny spot among the vines.

For an injection of adventure, head to Cable Bay Adventure Park, just north of Nelson. Set among native bush and farmland overlooking  Tasman Bay, the park offers plenty of ways to get the heart racing, including quad biking, ziplining, climbing and scenic experiences. It’s also  a great place simply to enjoy the views, with the coastline and surrounding hills providing an impressive backdrop.

Art lovers should make time for Hoglund Art Glass in Upper Moutere, where internationally recognised glass artists create striking  contemporary glassworks. Watch skilled craftspeople at work and explore the gallery filled with colourful, sculptural pieces. It is a  fascinating  glimpse into one of the region’s most distinctive creative industries.

Nelson Tasman is an outdoor playground, and spring is an ideal time to explore its walking and cycling trails. The region is home to part of  the Great Taste Trail, winding through vineyards, orchards, wetlands, coastal landscapes and charming rural communities. Hire a bike for  the day and make your own itinerary, stopping along the way for coffee, lunch or a wine tasting. For walkers, Abel Tasman National Park is  an obvious highlight. Golden beaches, turquoise water and lush native forest combine to create some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in  the country. Take a day walk, paddle along the coastline or use water taxis to create your own adventure.

Beyond Abel Tasman, Kahurangi National Park offers a wilder experience, with mountains, forests, limestone landscapes and spectacular  walking country. There are options ranging from short walks to serious multi-day adventures. And when the sun starts to dip, Nelson’s  relaxed hospitality scene is ready to welcome you back. Enjoy local seafood, regional produce and a glass of Nelson Tasman wine before  watching another spectacular sunset.

With sunshine, beaches, mountains, vineyards, art and adventure all within easy reach, Nelson Tasman is the kind of place where spring  days  seem to stretch a little longer. Come for the sunshine, stay for the adventures – and leave with plenty of reasons to return.
