Out and About

Northland – Newest Iconic Touriest Destination

The Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery is more than a museum, it is a multi-faceted immersive experience that includes art, architecture and ecology, giving visitors insight into the life and philosophies of the visionary Austrian New Zealander Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Located at the vibrant Town Basin marina in Whangārei, visitors can enjoy two exhibition spaces. The Hundertwasser in New Zealand 1973-2000 exhibition includes original paintings, visual art, tapestries, ecological work and architectural models as well as an overview of  Hundertwasser’s life in Aotearoa. Many of the artworks in the exhibition were created when Hundertwasser lived in New Zealand, such as  THE SMALL WAY which was painted at his Kaurinui property in the Bay of Islands.

The Wairau Māori Art Gallery, the world’s first dedicated Māori public contemporary art gallery, features changing exhibitions. On top of the  building is the award-winning afforested roof and golden cupola which visitors can climb to gain 360-degree views of the Town Basin and  Whangārei cityscape.

To complete the experience there is a MuseumShop, open to the public, which has exclusive and unique Hundertwasser applied art and Wairau merchandise with a carefully curated selection of gift items.

Visitors can self-guide or take a guided tour, available Thursday-Sunday. Tours tell the story of Hundertwasser, his legacy of a life lived in  harmony with nature and his love of New Zealand. Book tickets at the door or online www.hundertwasserartcentre.co.nz
