White Heron Sanctuary Tours
Discover the magic of the Kōtuku. With a population of just 150-200 across Aotearoa, encountering a single Kōtuku, or White Heron, is a special privilege. But to observe up to 50 nesting pairs, resplendent in their breeding plumage, interacting and raising their young is a spectacular and unforgettable sight!
Remarkably, the rare Kōtuku has only one breeding ground in all of Aotearoa, located in the enchanting Waitangiroto Nature Reserve near Whataroa, on the West Coast of the South Island.
The Kōtuku are in residence here during the breeding season, typically from mid September to early March. White Heron Sanctuary Tours, established in 1987, is the original and only tour operator permitted to visit this sacred nesting site and offers a unique opportunity to discover and learn about the nesting habits, conservation and cultural significance of this revered and majestic bird.
Departing from Whataroa, the exclusive 2.5 hour guided White Heron Sanctuary Tour begins with a scenic, informative minivan ride through private farmland and wetlands before entering the tranquil Waitangiroto Nature Reserve. On arrival, an easy 800 metre walk through ancient kahikatea rainforest leads to a purpose built viewing hide. Here, visitors will witness the ethereal Kōtuku and be captivated by behaviours seen only here at their ancestral nesting site.
The Sanctuary is also home to nesting Royal Spoonbill and Little Shag, offering further birdwatching and photographic opportunities. All tours are led by experienced local guides and operate under a Department of Conservation permit, ensuring a safe and environmentally respectful wildlife experience.
