Hanmer Springs

Just a 90 minute drive north of Christchurch, you’ll find the picturesque alpine village of Hanmer Springs, and now there’s another reason  it’s the best destination in New Zealand for your next road trip. For over 150 years, the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa complex has  grown from a small tin shed to a world renowned council owned complex.

Each of the 22 pools has its own unique offering, from tranquil adult only pools, to child friendly freshwater pools and play areas. Every visitor, from the young to the young at heart, can create a memorable experience.

The latest enhancements cement the complex as a destination for the whole family.

Opened in October, the Violet Vortex and Waiau Winder hydroslides feature state-of-the-art LED technology never used in New Zealand  before. Waiau Winder also features visual projections, currently displaying an underwater scene. The slides have been a huge hit with visitors already with the complex seeing an increase in visitor numbers this summer compared to 2022/2023.

As has become tradition for the complex, the slides were named by public submission and voting, attracting thousands of voters. Violet  Vortex was aptly named for its bright purple colouring, whereas the Waiau Winder honours the rich heritage and natural wonders of the  region. The name combines suggestions from several nominees and pays homage to the pristine rivers that surround Hanmer Springs, the  Waiau Toa and Waiau Uwha.

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa has always been known for its innovation. In 2019 they opened the largest aquatic thrill ride in New  Zealand, Conical Thrill, and the Cascade Pools, which feature five interconnected pools surrounded by native gardens. The question for many though, is what are they going to come up with next?!
