Auckland’s Stardome Observatory recently reopened after an extensive renovation to reveal a new and improved space centre that places  mātauranga Māori equally alongside Western scientific tradition.

The refurbishment includes a complete overhaul of its exhibition space, a roof replacement and new planetarium seating. New vibrant and  hands-on public galleries give visitors a chance to connect with the latest observations in science and astronomy.

In combination with Stardome’s popular indoor planetarium shows and courtyard telescope viewing, visitors can learn the skills to identify  stars and planets above us. It’s also the first place in Aotearoa to offer a comprehensive star map with over 100 Māori names of whetū (stars), planets and constellations.

A suite of brand-new planetarium shows are also part of Stardome’s upgrade including new, permanent seasonal Māori astronomy shows  that will give visitors an authentic way to connect to the night sky in this part of the world. There are also presenter-led shows aimed  specially at kids, sci-fi movie nights, and space science documentaries ensuring that there’s something for everyone.

Stardome, located on Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, is open from 9am to 10.30pm daily (except Monday  nights). Open whatever the weather! For more information and show programme visit www.stardome.org.nz
